a gift to you

I contemplated selling this book, but in the final analysis I decided that it was better to give. Jesus tells us, "Freely you have received, freely give." So I will. I hope you enjoy and benefit from it.

I'm a Christian, a Jesus follower. He gave His life away for the greatest reason possible: so everyone could understand that we can have eternal life. As a follower, I give my life away freely, too, though not like He did (since I'm obviously not God.) My firm belief is that...God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners....For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

A disciple becomes like the one she follows, and one day I realized that about the neatest way I could give my 'life' away was to give this book away to anyone who wanted to read it! But I couldn't afford to print it and send it out, so doing it online was the best way--on a blog it could be freely given. Jesus said, "Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." Heart follows treasure... My treasure is Jesus!

Lord, I admit I'm a sinner. I've done many things that don’t please You. I've lived my life for myself and tried to fill that God-shaped hole in me with many other things. I want to change now. Forgive me. I believe that You died on the cross and exchanged Your innocent life for my sinful one. You rose from the grave to show me that life is eternal. You did what I couldn't do for myself. Come and take control of my life. I give it to you. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases You. I want to spend eternity with You. Amen

I learned tremendous amounts writing under your guidance for the first five years of The Pastel Journal’s existence, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity you first gave me to begin writing professionally.

F+W Publications originally published several of these chapters as articles featured in The Pastel Journal, although many of them have since been further edited as I’ve discovered more about the subjects. I especially want to thank editors Maureen Bloomfield and Anne Hevener, each of whom has helped me along the way, as well as the entire staff of editors that have consistently corrected and improved on what I've written.

Many thanks to Philip Van Hulle for editing these pages. I’ve learned over the years that a good editor works hard to make the author look better than she is.

The people who have passed through my classrooms for over 20 years have acted as the catalyst for this book, constantly seeking to understand more, consistently asking excellent and engaging questions that required me to find the bottom line, and providing the enjoyment of watching them journey along the pastel pathway. I meant it every time I said, “It’s looking good. Keep going!”

A special thanks to my Thursday art gang who have kept coming back for many years of fun, work and growth. Some have come and gone, but you all know who you are. It’s a privilege to teach such a talented group. I couldn’t do it without you. You always make ME look good!

Deborah Secor: Please don’t laugh when I tell you that there's more to my life than art. That 30 year career has been a long journey, as I searched for beauty and truth, but back in 1999 I fell in love with the Lord Jesus Christ. Until I found Him, the source of all truth, I was never truly satisfied. Lately my life has been changing. I’m becoming much more serious abut my relationship with Him, and the never-really-satisfying-enough career is just not important to me the way it once was. Today I find myself more satisfied when I pray for a friend, or give someone something I’ve made, or read the Bible and think about how to live it out every day. I know this transformation baffles a lot of my friends, but I hope you will all hang in there to see how this comes out. Now as I paint or sew, I try to make each stroke and every stitch to His glory. How? Well, I’m not pursuing a career. Now I’m a disciple. One time Jesus told the crowd, "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life...” When they asked Him what work they should do in that case, He said, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent." So I believe in Him and I follow.

It's only offered online here at this time. I know many would prefer a print book to reading online, but in researching print options I found that the time it would take me to format the text and photographs to put into print, whether self-published or using a print-on-demand publisher, was much better spent writing and posting here. The blog format allows me to give it away freely to all.

Would you like to have a personal critique of your painting?

Send a good digital photograph of the painting to me and in return receive a complete written critique, often with digital fixes or suggestions. I want to help you find your strengths and suggest additional things help. You can ask for a hard or soft critique, depending on what you think will be most helpful.

My area of expertise is landscapes in pastel, of course, but I'm happy to give an opinion on any painting in any medium. I'm happy to analyze the classical elements of painting.

I'll e-mail a complete evaluation of the painting, including discussion of things such as composition, color, value, contrast, area of interest, movement, technique, mood, emotion, perspective, proportion and anything else that seems appropriate, at $30.00 per painting.
